Child Abuse

Once, many years back, me my siblings were looking at pictures from "back in the day" when we were wee little kids. My brother John, being the funny person that he is, commented to my Mom that the way she used to dress us could be considered a form of child abuse. At the time my Mom just laughed it off.....it was FUNNY. And really? Who dresses their kids like that anyway? Plaids and Polyesters and short shorts. It is only now, that I have little wee ones of my own, that I am realizing that my Mom most likely didn't dress us at all. I mean, just because you have cute kids, and you buy them 100's of dollars worth of really cute and stylish clothes, doesn't mean they're going to wear them. Who are we kidding? Most days, the kids dress themselves. And most days? It's not pretty. Case in point:
This is how my kids went to the grocery store today.
At first glance: Not so bad. Just a slight kool-aid moustache and crusted boogies under the nose.
Wait a minute. Are those the basketball shorts that B wore yesterday? And paired with a non-matching basketball shirt that we got in the mail today? Sweet Mother of Mary.
Yep. This boy looks pretty stylin'...... And pretty WT.
Oh look. A cute new hoodie from Old Navy on a cute little girl.
What the???? Is this for real?. Hearts, paired with polka dots, paired with cowboy boots? Whose child is this and where is her Mother?

And you wanna know the sad thing? Everything that Savy is wearing is brand new. Hence her deep desire to wear everything at once. If you took the hoodie off you would see a pink and white striped shirt. It's quite the ensemble.

So there it is. You be the judge? Abuse or not? I think I'll opt for the "Mom -who -picks -her -battles- and -decided -that- this- was- one -battle -that -was- not- worth- fighting" option.

But seriously? Can you believe I took them to the store like that? That's just messed up.

I have taken my kids to the store looking MUCH worse!! But they do look pretty "special"!! Cuties!

I'd do the same thing. If I had a box of new clothes delivered to my door, I'd throw them all on and then head to Reams where I would be strutting my stuff in my new digs. Don't believe me?? Go ahead, send me a box of new clothes and I'll send you a picture of me in the produce section.

Darling kids.

They are looking good!!! I'm just wondering why you didn't put a picture of what you wore to the store?

Stopping by from SITS. Hope your day goes better and that you get a break/rest this afternoon. At our house though it may be fall it is going to be 94 degrees outside here in Houston and our air went out last night.

I love your post, and I agree. One time my son went to the store in his bathing suit and alligator rain boots. To top it off he chose to wear a Santa hat, and yes, it was the middle of summer, go figure.

Love you blog, I am not a follower!!

I agree. You totally have to pick your battles. It's not like they were going to school or church. It was the store. And a meltdown because you asked them to change just wouldn't be worth it!

total sidenote - I saw a blog comment from another Sydney on this same post... and had a momentary lapse thinking "good grief, did I already comment on here??"

Ha! I love it! You should see my kids on a daily basis....yeah, I pick my battles too.

Happy SITS Saturday sharefest!

My computer keeps kicking me off your blog when I try to post a comment. I am serious!!

So are you just trying to make fun of my boys? I mean really, your kids rarely look like that. Now mine, pretty much all the time. hehehe

If you think those outfits are bad, you should see some of the ones that my kids come up with.

I to am of the "pick-your-battles-and-clothes-aren't-one-of-them" camp.

How fitting that you were venturing to Walmart...seriously, they fit right in! I'm sorry but the picture of Savy knocked me on my butt laughing...that girl reminds me so much of you! You are such the kind mother to NOT pick that battle...maybe I should take a lesson from you because I have not relinquished that control just yet! As for abuse...I'm calling DSFS (just love to throw that term around like I'm a big-wig on T.V.).

oops, my bad...for some reason I thought you said you were going to Walmart! Now I know it was an actual grocery store...

I can absolutely believe you took your kids to the grocery store dressed like that ...

And I'll raise you my daughter dressed in pajamas underneath a polo-style dress with clogs for church a few years ago.

Picking your battles is the way to go to preserve your sanity. Letting them dress themselves is a double bonus - sanity preservation now, blackmail material later since you'll of course have photographic evidence of their sartorial skills at this age.

Stopping by from SITS to say hello!

Stopping by from SITS...

I have so many battles with my 3 year old daughter over everything. I have given up on clothing. As long as it is weather appropriate, I don't care. Last week we went to Target with her in red sparkly shoes, striped leggings and a polka dot shirt. I was at least able to convince her to lose her fuscia feather boa.

Bah! That is SO not bad. From far away, you can't even see the cool aid mustache.

You were ahead of me in RollCall this morning!

Lol! When my kids were younger they went out dressed like this all the time.
Your kids are such cuties.

oh hilarious. I fight the what are you going to wear today battle daily with my oldest girl. It's just life. And i detest everything she picks out. I commonly say, why do you pick the ugliest clothes out that you own? (why does she have such ugly clothes??)

LOL that's sooo true! I have a picture of us as kids and the plaids and rainbow sweaters were all there.
My daughter loves to dress herself and it can definitely be a fashion disaster. great post!

So funny!!! At my house, it isn't so much my daughter dressing herself that is the problem, it is when her dad helps her pick stuff out. That poor man couldn't match colors and patterns if it was to save his life!! I have had to force myself to look away and move on....I think that I dressed myself in hearts and polkadots at least once as a child!

I'm glad that you stopped by today and are excited about the knit-a-square! Awesome! Let me know how it goes! I'm sure that your daughter will do great!

I stopped by from SITS! And I wouldn't consider that child abuse, because if I did I would have to accuse myself!

When kids get to the age where they can dress themselves it just gets CRAZY!
